Project Details

Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a highly successful, forward thinking Academy based in Brighton, East Sussex.

Both flat and pitched roof areas at the Academy were in need of urgent renewal including brickwork, trays, pointing and glazing. The flat roof area alone totalled 4600m2 and the pitched roofing was 800m2.

Funding for the project was obtained from the Government Condition Improvement Fund based on high performance roofing systems which would improve the thermal performance and fabric of the buildings at the school.

Main Coverings

For the flat roofs IKO’s Ultra prevent Guardian (Hybrid) built –up system was used which offers outstanding waterproofing performance and life expectancy and is BBA certified to last in excess of 30 years.

Marley Element Clay Tiles and fittings were used on the two main pitched roofs.

Due to the nature of the site, a hybrid system was preferred by the client in order to reduce the use of hot works and for its excellent waterproofing performance.

Tapered insulation was also used on a number of roof areas to improve the removal of ponding water.

Other Coverings used

IKO liquid coatings and tapered insulation

In 2014 IKO plc was instructed to survey all the roofs at the academy. This survey revealed that the roofs were all in need of replacement. There were 24 flat roof areas and two main pitched roof buildings, each requiring their own unique solutions to overcome water penetration and improve thermal efficiency.

Ridge Consultancy used the report to bid for funding with lead sponsors the Aldridge Foundation and co-sponsors Brighton & Hove City Council. Ridge provided the specifications and we won the tender. Being multi-disciplined we were able to undertake all the works in house including all carpentry and brickwork.

The project would involve working on a live school from Spring 2014 to January 2015 without disruption to the Academy’s staff and pupils with intensive works completed during the school holidays.

Our team worked very closely with IKO and Ridge Consultancy, adapting and improving detail on the works progress.

The partnership worked extremely well, sharing information to deliver the project on time and within budget.

There were no safety issues and the Academy was able to continue its daily operation with minimal disruption.

All the roofs now meet Part L Building Regulations and should remain trouble free for many, many years.
