Project Details

This is the home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1924 until the end of his life.

Under the direction of the National Trust, Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd won the contract to completely re-roof the house including all lead work, decorations to windows and new cast iron rainwater replacement. Contract value of £450,000.

We had to ensure that this property remained water tight throughout. P&T scaffolding from Tunbridge Wells designed and erected a scaffold with water wind load pods and an ubix roof which provided total protection. The interior was lit by low voltage lighting.

The project was extensive and works progressed over a period of 6 months including when the property was open to the public.

Prior to work commencing, National Trust conservators removed and protected the parts of the interior and the fabric against dust.

Many timbers repairs were required and were completed to match the original features.

The roof was recovered using Keymer traditional handmade tiles and fittings with nonferrous fixings.

Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd had many trainee tilers and slater’s programmes with NVQs. Part of their training is to work under supervision on contracts such as Chartwell. This was remarked upon very favourably by the National Trust and we continue this practice as first-hand experience is far better than any classroom courses provided.
