Project Details

The tall elegant arches are some of the best examples of early 14th century architecture in Sussex.

The oldest parts are the 12th Century tower which we believe to be the only Sussex tower which forms the west end of the Nave.

On 3rd July 1944 an enemy bomb demolished three and damaged ted of the windows, the roof and the shingles to the spires. Mentioned in the doomsday book (9, 5).

This church has much important architectural interest. The diocese grade II and accredited building conservation architect, Mr, Peter Pritchet of John D Clarke & Partners carry out quinquenial inspections under the direction of the Parish at five yearly intervals.

From a recent survey it was evident that the cedar shingles were in very poor condition with the thinning and split shingles and had been extensively damaged by woodpeckers.

The area adjacent to the Nave also suffered damage due to the wind vortex to this area.

Great consideration was given to the new covering and it was decided that the best option was English Oak Shakes fixed with stainless steel fixings. This provided a closer grained hard wood which would withstand not only the exposed position of the tower but help prevent further woodpecker damage.

The tower was stripped down to the oak boarding which was then re-fixed with stainless steel ring shank nails and treated with an eco-friendly wood preservative. Cleft on the Quarter Oak Shakes were then fixed with stanless steel fixings. The finish was redecorated and the flag arrow gilded with 23 1/2 arved gold leaf.

A new lightning conductor was fitted to the tower to complete the works. The value of the project was £45,000 and took eight weeks to complete.
