Phase 1 of Restoration on Portsmouth Cathedral Complete

Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd have just completed Phase one of  a major restoration project on the roof at Portsmouth Cathedral in Hampshire. The work was part funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help develop an educational and awareness programme. Tours of the roof works and workshops were arranged for local schools and other groups. Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd constructed a small roof which enabled children to understand how roof tiles were laid and gave the children an opportunity to lay a few tiles. The scope of the works was quite varied and included peg tile roofing, lead work to gutters and flashings, replacement cast iron works, repairs to medieval dormer windows, refurbishment and cleaning leaded light windows, renewing copper cladding, stonework and pointing repairs. During the project the visitors could see all these operations at various times. Phase 2 has now started and the works are internal, including specialist stonework, mortar repairs and full decoration with lime wash.
